Be careful what you wish for

Since the A/C repairman rescued my compressor from the ants, it's been running like gangbusters. More than I realized, apparently.

A few days ago, I inadvertently discovered that not only does it now run when the thermostat tells it to (i.e., when it gets too warm in the house), it also runs when the thermostat is comfortably chillin' and doesn't need any heat pumped. It even runs if I shut the thermostat off completely. It shuts off only when I flip the circuit breaker in the garage.

It has evidently been running continuously since the ant exorcism, though I didn't notice it for days. I mean, look, the problem was that it wouldn't turn on. After checking the first few times the air handler turned on and confirming that, yes, the compressor was also running, I had no reason whatsoever to go check on it when it was supposed to be off -- that was never an issue.

Be careful what you wish for...

1:00 PM update:

The A/C man just came by (in response to the call I put in around 10 AM Friday). Guess what? When he replaced that doohickey last week, he connected the fan backwards. (It was just the fan that was running continuously, not the compressor. Good thing, I imagine.) Oops.
