Nitpicking "Demons" (spoiler alert)

OK, so I watched the sort-of-penultimate Enterprise tonight (depends on whether you count episodes [two left] or air dates [those two will air back-to-back]). Observations and nits:

  • Doncha just love the way old girlfriends we've never heard of before suddenly show up to drive the plot? How convenient for Terra Prime that they just happened to have an old flame of Travis's to infiltrate Enterprise.
  • Speaking of Travis's old flame, how did she get aboard in the first place? Somehow it seems like there should be more to getting onto Starfleet's flagship than just saying, "Hi, I've been assigned to do a story on Enterprise -- I'll just mosey on down to my old friend's cabin to interview him. I don't need an escort, thanks, I know the way." That would be pretty lax security.
  • I can't see why everyone is so totally baffled about how there could be an offspring of Trip and T'pol even though she has never been pregnant. Have the concepts of artificial insemination, sperm and egg donors, "test-tube" babies, and surrogates been forgotten in the 22nd century? True, we don't know yet how or when their sperm and eggs were obtained by Terra Prime, but they all act as if it's impossible.
  • Harry Groener sure has put on weight since he played Tam Elbrun.
  • Am I just imagining this, or was Spock supposed to have been the first Vulcan-human hybrid?
  • Someone explain to me why T'pol doesn't have to wear a Starfleet uniform.
  • Funny how suddenly everyone is wearing universal translators on the outside of their clothing, when for the last four years they've kept them conveniently hidden. Of course, that gave them a way to "bug" Gannett.
  • I kept feeling like there were missing scenes in the segment with Trip and T'pol on the mining station. I had a hard time following exactly what they were doing.
  • Seems strange to have a two-part story, the second part of which is aired back-to-back with the finale, which as far as I can tell is not a direct continuation of the arc.
Don't get me wrong; overall, I enjoyed the episode, and I'll be interested to see how the baby came about and what happens to it. I just wish they could do it without all the continuity issues and fortuitous coincidences. I guess that's inherent in doing a prequel series.

I *had* had it into my head that Spock was the first human-Vulcan, but I'm not positive that was in fact true. What I do know for certain was that they said he was the first Vulcan in Starfleet, which they've clearly contradicted now with T'Pol. Maybe that's why she doesn't wear the uniform -- they figure we won't notice the inconsistency. ;-)

I couldn't figure out what had happened to test tubes in the 22nd century either.
