No lawn-mowing? No hula dancing? No shit.

As intriguing as "No grave-digging" might be as a meaning for that "No ....." sign at the oceanfront, sadly, it is not correct. So, herewith the full sign:

The ones I numbered 1 and 2 in my original post do, in fact, prohibit fires and vehicles, more specifically "No Open Fires" and "No Motorized Vehicles On Beach". It would appear that closed fires, a horse-drawn cart, or a Ford F-150 with its engine removed would be OK.

Now, I've seen signs before that demanded the use of a leash, and this sign included such a requirement, "Leash / tether required at all times." But surprisingly, it wasn't applied to my number 3 illustration, which, as expected, involves dogs. This is no simple "No Dogs" sign; the prohibition applies only to the hours of 10 AM to 6 PM, and only during the painstakingly defined period from 6 PM Friday before Memorial Day through 6 PM Labor Day -- a time span that presumably equates to "tourist season". Furthermore, lest dog owners think they have free rein the rest of the time, the powers that be took care to specify "Feces to be removed in airtight container by owner at all times." Or in other words, "No Shit."

So, if it's not the dogs, who or what needs that leash? That would be my #4 pictogram, a time restriction on surfing (as excruciatingly specific as the one on dogs, and even more complicated), with the added caveat concerning leashes and tethers. In fact, this sign apparently isn't explicit enough, so this more detailed one was posted nearby:

Note the warning to "Watch out for swimmers". Sounds ominous. I wonder if they bite?

Finally, we come to the most obscure of the lot, the mysterious #5. In contrast to the highly specific dog and surfing ordinances, this one turns out to be a somewhat vague "No Dune Disturbance". So, it doesn't seem to actually prohibit lawn-mowing, camping, or grave-digging.

As long as you can do it without disturbing the dunes.
