... but not a total dud, either. My very first Virginia Lottery "scratcher" (click image for a more readable view of the highlighted areas) paid back $5 on my $2 investment, from Mediterranean Avenue of all places. Considering that the roughly 1 in 4 chance of winning any prize at all is overwhelmingly provided by $2 "break-even" prizes, I considered myself quite lucky to get anything above that. Still, would have been nice to pass GO and collect $15K.
